Antòni Tàpies. The Practice of Art

Antòni Tàpies. The Practice of Art

2023

Bozar recalls the work of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012) with a retrospective that takes a trip back in time between 1944 and the 90s. This is the first major exhibition held in Belgium where a complete vision of the work of the artist with a selection of 122 works gathered for the first time in several decades. From the first drawings and self-portraits, the exhibition unfolds with the material paintings of the 50s and the objects and assemblages of the 60s and 70s. It continues with the varnishes of the 80s, which the artist had started a few years before coinciding with beginning of democracy in Spain, and culminates with the works of the 90s, when Tàpies continued the formal and material experimentation that had always been at the center of his work.

A self-taught artist during the interwar period, Tàpies reflected on the human condition, his historical situation and artistic practice, especially the limits and contradictions of painting. His work, very prolific, is spread throughout the world.
