Josep Suñol i Soler

Josep Ildefons Suñol i Soler (Barcelona, 1927-2019) was a businessman, lawyer and collector of Catalan art, son of Josep Suñol i Garriga and Glòria Soler Elias.

His career as a businessman and art collector was extensive and fruitful, highlighting his philanthropic role and contributions to social and collective improvement. This activity is still carried out through the foundations he promoted: Fundació Glòria Soler, which supports projects in the field of health, especially in regard to paediatric palliative care and the fight against AIDS and leukaemia, andFundació Suñol, which focuses on the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art through the creation of exhibition projects and activities. In 2017, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalan Government, awarded him with the Creu de Sant Jordi distinction.

Fundació Suñol

Fundació Suñol is a private, non-profit organisation that in 2022 celebrates 20 years reinforcing the aim of spreading the Suñol Soler Collection and, simultaneously, promoting contemporary artistic production and dissemination, with the aim of completing Barcelona’s cultural proposal and expand the city’s contemporary knowledge platform.

The Fundació Suñol works on several axes. On the one hand, it is dedicated to the conservation and dissemination of the collection, which under different formats and readings, is shown both in its own venue and in collaboration with renowned cultural institutions. On the other hand, it maintains a commitment to contemporary creation through the production and organisation of exhibitions and activities on themes, artists or projects of interest.

In addition, it promotes public programs and educational projects around contemporary art aimed at a diversity of groups and in dialogue with different agents.

During twenty years of activity, the foundation has played a fundamental role in the cultural scene of Barcelona. The organization of nearly a hundred exhibitions supports this route, as well as the attendance of more than 100,000 visitors to its exhibitions and activities. The foundation has expanded its scope of action through collaborations with prominent museums and institutions, thus positioning the collection at a prominent national and international level.

The Fundació Suñol and the Fundació Glòria Soler work to promote and disseminate art contemporary and in social, philanthropic and cultural programs, respectively.

Fundació Glòria Soler

The Glòria Soler Foundation is a private non-profit organization, created in 2015 on the initiative of Josep Suñol Soler.

It shares the president, board of trustees and headquarters with the Fundació Suñol. The two foundations unite art and philanthropy, working together in the field of art and citizenship as an engine of social transformation.

Since 2020, the Glória Soler Foundation has incorporated into its mission an important legacy in relation to the conservation and custody of the Suñol Soler collection, which it develops jointly with the Suñol Foundation.

The Glòria Soler Foundation, in addition to working in the field of art as a tool for social inclusion and personal growth, promotes other solidarity and innovative programs in the scientific, social and humanistic fields, in collaboration with entities of recognized prestige and experience.

In the field of health, the Glòria Soler Foundation has been involved in initiatives, including the promotion of the Pediatric Palliative Cures Unit of the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, the support for the development of the therapeutic vaccine and other clinical trials against it. HIV / AIDS virus, led by the IrsiCaixa team and in collaboration with the ARI Project of the Hospital Clínic in the fight against leukemia.

Since 2020, given the exceptional health emergency situation generated by the global pandemic, the Glòria Soler Foundation has focused its efforts and resources on improving knowledge of the new SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as helping the most vulnerable population . Collaboration is essential to advance treatment and prevention against COVID-19 and to alleviate the effects of the economic and social crisis on the population.
