Gastone Novelli

Più inutile, 1958

Viena, 1925 - Milà (Itàlia), 1968

He spent his childhood and youth in Rome, where he became involved in the Italian resistance movement in 1943, and was arrested and tortured, events that directly influenced his artistic output. In 1945 he moved to Florence and graduated in political science. After the Second World War he began painting and producing graphic works that were heavily influenced by Max Bill’s neoconstructivist theories, and in 1950 he moved to Brazil to devote himself to applied arts.

His painting technique consists of a dynamic brushstroke. His subject matter reflects his life experiences, thus showing an exploration of form and colour. Adrenaline and introspection are terms that capture his work, in which the tension between the fleeting nature of life and the shadow of mortality is palpable.

The Suñol Soler Collection holds a single work by the artist entitled, Più inutile (1958). This was exhibited in the Suñol Foundation’s group exhibition entitled “Italy: The Six Senses” (2015-16).
