José Manuel Broto

Zaragoza, 1949

In 1949, José Manuel Broto was born in Zaragoza and studied in Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Zaragoza to develop his work as a painter. He moved to Barcelona in 1972, where he did his firsts works closely associated with constructivism. In the same city, he founded Grupo Trama a year later with other artists and journalists like Gonzalo Tena or Javier Rubio. This group proposes a painting that explores the fields of abstraction in the face of the growing presence in Catalonia of conceptual practices. For this reason, his works are deeply abstract during this period.

In the eighties his work develops in big stands, focusing on the expressiveness, as well as on the contradictions of matter, color, and form. In addition, it will replace acrylic paint with oil, exploring all expressive possibilities of color through random compositions. However, on many occasions, constructivism and spatial organization emerge in his works, remitting to a painting where the straight line is engaged with the expressive power of the color stain. He coincided in Paris with artists such as Miquel Barceló, Miguel Ángel Campano, and José Maria Sicilia, where he resided from 1985 to 1995.

After France, he moved to Mallorca, where his artistic work continued evolving into a simplification of materials and forms. He began to introduce themes like space and atmospheric forms, as well as transparency, and many more.
