This exhibition puts together 27 pieces from the Josep Suñol Collection to help expand visitors’ knowledge of 20th-century art. It comprises work by 18 artists who played a key role in the field of visual arts in recent years, marked by a shift away from previous conventions of representation.
The 27 pieces – which date from 1924 to 1998 – are created by artists such as Andy Warhol, Antonio Saura, Manuel Millares, Darío Villalba, Miquel Barceló, Nino Longobardi, José Manuel Broto, Christo, Jean Arp, Lucio Fontana, Susana Solano, Claudio Bravo, Antòni Tàpies, Man Ray, José Mª Sicilia, Luis Lugán, Zush and Alberto García-Alix.
These works of art take the form of painting, sculpture and photography and include pop art, the groundbreaking forms of the 1960s, the purest abstraction, material or organic pieces – some calm, others perturbing, but all offering a succinct overview of the transformation of the artistic sphere in th e 20th century.
The exhibition spans eight decades, but features a large number of pieces from the 1970s and 1980s, when Josep Suñol acquired the bulk of his collection. It portrays a complex period rich in ideas ranging from the avant-garde to the final creations from the close of the last century.
